Is Ford's Hypercar programme already facing an uphill battle?
As of yet, Ford's all-new Hypercar is yet to even turn a wheel on track
On the 17th of July, Ford’s World Endurance Championship Hypercar project took a major step forward.
The as-yet-unnamed prototype’s 5.4-litre V8 was fired up for the first time, an occasion Ford's project manager Dan Sayers described as “more than just a symbolic moment”, one that represents “a crucial step towards validation”.
This wasn’t a simple dyno test either.
The Deaborn-built V8, as well as a full-spec hybrid system, were married to a fully built chassis and brought to life at Oreca’s headquarters, the French outfit having developed the chassis in partnership with Ford.
Despite his optimism, Sayers is aware of the work that lies ahead and has stated that while “work in the simulator and the data from the test bed provide an excellent foundation”, track time will provide unparalleled insight and understanding.
Ford is expected to begin its on-track running in August with a single chassis on hand. A complete driver lineup has also been announced. Logan Sargeant, Mike Rockenfeller, Tom Blomqvist, Nick Yelloy and Matt Campbell will assume driver duties next year.
Despite the progress, the timing of these events has raised a few questions. Assuming Ford meets its self-imposed deadline and begins testing in August, the team will have less than six months to ready itself in time for the start of the 2026 season.
For context, McLaren, the other new Hypercar entrant, has already completed nearly three months’ worth of on-track testing, having taken to Imola for the first time in April.
In fact, Genesis Magma Racing began its first shakedown of the GMR-001 in August of 2025, eight months before the 2026 Prologue at Imola. Juxtapose that with the fact that Ford is yet to reveal a full concept design of its Hypercar challenger, and questions over the team’s preparedness are inevitable.

A major surprise is always a possibility, but as we’ve seen with countless new arrivals in the past, reduced track time typically results in reduced data and reduced opportunities to address any possible teething trouble.
This is of particular note given the fact that Sayers has outlined performance, reliability, aerodynamic development and the integration of the hybrid system as the main targets.
The main targets for a car that is yet to turn a wheel in anger or even have a formal unveiling, all while McLaren has hit the ground running and given the MCL-HY its public debut.
Given Ford’s illustrious history in endurance racing, it’ll surprise no one to learn that expectations have been high ever since the project’s announcement in January of 2025.
Sayers has publicly stated that this project aims to help Ford reclaim its “seat at the top table of endurance racing”. With several high-profile manufacturers already in play, not least Ford’s historic rivals Ferrari, the Blue Oval will be expected to, at the very least, make steady progress from the off.
If the first half of Genesis’ debut campaign is anything to go by, incremental early gains are to be expected even with a factory-backed, extensively developed project.
It would be hugely disappointing to see Ford well off the pace, and while that is by no means guaranteed, McLaren seems to have done everything in its power to maximise preparation ahead of the 2027 season.
With Ford aiming for an identical deadline, it's tough to contest the claim that the Blue Oval is, by that metric, currently lagging.
